Canon EOS-1D X Mark II: price, specs, release date confirmed

Canon has ended months of speculation about an update to its flagship camera for professionals, and the EOS-1D X Mark II not only replaces the 1D X, but the Canon EOS-1D C movie camera as well.

Chief among its specifications are 4K video capability, an improved autofocus system and a continuous shooting mode that offers a staggering 14 frames per second with full AF/AE tracking and 16fps in Live View mode.

While 4K video is certainly the headline specification for this new Canon camera, what’s really astounding is that it doesn’t just shoot at 30fps – it can shoot 4K at 60fps as well.

The Canon 1D X Mark II also enables Full HD (1920x1080p) movie shooting at an 120fps, and moments from a 60fps 4K scene can be extracted as a high resolution 8.8-megapixel still image.

Canon says its Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology and Movie Servo AF allow for fast and smooth AF in 4K and Full HD shooting, while the 1D X Mark II’s touch panel LCD enables you to quickly select AF points when shooting movies.

The new Canon camera also boasts a brand new sensor which, at 20.2 megapixels, is well short of the EOS 5DS’ 50-million pixels, but the Canon EOS-1D X II is aimed at a completely different market of press and sports photographers.

What’s more, the new sensor incorporates Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology for the first time in a full-frame Canon camera.

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark II also boasts a new 61-point AF system with 41 cross-type AF points, which Canon says covers an expanded area and focuses under low light up to -3EV.

The 1D X Mark II’s new AF system also offers f/8 AF support with all 61 points, allowing you to choose the focus point.

The autofocus tracking is aided by the EOS-1D X Mark II’s new 360,000-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor, which provides improved subject detection – an interesting example of how metering and focusing work closely together in the latest cameras.

Other key specs of the Canon 1D X Mark II include a native ISO range from 100 to 51,200, but this can be expanded down to ISO 50 and all the way up to 409,600. And the 1D X Mark II boasts Canon’s new Dual DIGIC 6+ processors.
