Sony a68 introduces 4D Focus, promises accurate AF as low as EV -2

Sony has unveiled a new A-mount camera, the Sony a68 – price tag still unknown at the time of writing – which introduces a new 4D Focus and a number of other professional features inherited from the Sony A77 II.

The Sony a68 promises “extraordinary AF performance under any shooting conditions”, Sony says, even in lighting conditions as low as EV-2, thanks to the new Sony camera’s 4D Focus system.

The new phase detection AF system employs 70 AF points, including 15 cross type, plus a dedicated f/2.8 AF sensor to help the Sony a68 focus in low-light scenes.

Sony says the a68 also delivers constant AF tracking at up to 8fps continuous shooting.

Inside the Sony a68 is a 24-megapixel APS-C-size Exmor CMOS sensor, which delivers a native ISO range from 100 to 25,600. Also on board is Sony’s BIONZ X image processor, which uses Detail Reproduction and Diffraction-reducing technologies, as well as new Area-specific Noise Reduction to help deliver more fine detail.

Photographers can frame their images and movies through the Sony a68’s OLED Tru-Finder viewfinder, which offers 100% coverage.

On back of the Sony a68 is a 2.7-inch Tru-Finder LCD, which is tiltable up to 135 degrees upwards or 55 degrees downwards. What’s more, it offers 10 customisable buttons for your most frequently used settings.

The Sony a68 can also record full HD movies in the XAVC S format at up to 50Mbps.
