Photofocus Photowalk: Evening Portraits in Washington, D.C. with Levi Sim and Lisa Robinson

We’ve got a Perfectly Clear Photowalk in Washington, D.C. and I couldn’t be happier to have my co-author, Lisa Robinson joining me to help us make some terrific evening portraits. We’ll use speedlights and modifiers to make the most of the darkening light and the glow on the monuments. This is a hands-on shooting time when you can practice various techniques, like dragging the shutter, long exposures, and light placement for the most flattering portraits. All skill levels are welcome! I’m excited to exercise a lot of fun tools in one of the world’s most photogenic places.

I made this during a portrait photowalk in Phoenix. Finished with Perfectly Clear and Lightroom.

We’re really pleased to team up with Perfectly Clear and the PAC for this event–check out their groups around the world. This is a free event, and we’ve got several raffle prizes, including a license to Perfectly Clear, and a complimentary ticket to Scott Kelby’s Shoot Like a Pro Reloaded tour on Friday (here’s an interview with Scott detailing some of the things you’ll learn there)

This is a hands-on shooting time: bring your camera and speedlight/flash if you’ve got them, as well as triggers you use (or would like to start using). Normally, I’d like to have a tripod for this kind of thing, but that may not be possible in the Monuments, so I’ll just be using my Platypod Pro. I’ll be using Perfectly Clear with Lightroom and Photoshop to finish my pictures, later, and I encourage you to download the free trial and give it a shot and see how it can make a big impact on your work (they’re our sponsor, after all).

When:

Tuesday 10/13 @7:30pm

Where:

Bookstore/Gift Shop at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial (parking and clean restrooms available there). From here, we’ll walk and shoot focusing on the Tidal Basin area and the sneaky, less common views we’ll gain from there.

1964 Independence Ave SW, Washington, DC 20024

What to Bring:

Bring your camera with fresh batteries and memory cards. I’ll be using speedlights, and expect to focus on people portraits with cityscape and architecture. Bring your speedlight or flash (and batteries) and I’ll help you make the most of it. Remember to bring a fun attitude, too 😀

Levi Sim is passionate about making photographs and helping others make their pictures better, too. Join him on Twitter and Instagram (@PhotoLevi), read more of his articles here, and join him for a photowalk in a city near you.
