Sunday evening there was a lunar eclipse during a supermoon! Here’s the photo I took along with some details on how it was taken.
First I think that this event should have been called the “Ultramoon”, cause why not?
Technical Details
- Shot with a Canon 70D on a tripod
- 70-200mm lens at 200mm
- ISO 125
- f/3.5
- 1 second long exposure
- triggered by wireless remote

Processing
- A bit of sharpening (probably a tad too much)
- A bump in clarity
- Increase in shadows
- I cropped the image to centre the moon and zoom in a bit
- I found it kind of strange how much of the image was controlled by the highlights slider (capable of making the moon totally black, or completely over exposed). It basically acted like the exposure slider.
Shooting The Photo
I hadn’t planned on taking photos of the moon, but it looked pretty neat from our bedroom window so I hustled outside to see what I could get.
By the time I got everything setup I had missed the total eclipse. I think the partial eclipse still turned out pretty well.
It would be neat to have a Nikon P900 super zoom for situations like this (you would be able to fill the whole frame of the photo with the moon!)
