Canon 1D X Mark II Image Corruption with SanDisk CFast Cards

Canon 1D X Mark II with CFast Card and Reader

Canon USA has issued a product advisory for the Canon 1D X Mark II. In a specific set of circumstances, certain SanDisk CFast 2.0 cards can cause corrupted images with the Canon 1D X Mark II.

Canon says this is a problem with the SanDisk cards; however, Canon is considering releasing a firmware update to correct this problem. The specific circumstances that could lead to corrupted images occurs when “image files about 16MB or less recorded immediately before the camera’s power is turned off.”

Canon says the following steps can be taken to prevent image corruption:

Before powering the camera off, please take extra shots*1 because the extra shots taken immediately before the camera is powered off may experience the corruption and not the images taken before the extra shots were taken.

*1 The table below shows the most popular file types used and how many extra shots are recommended.

The specific SanDisk CFast 2.0 cards affected by this image corruption issue are as follows:

  • SanDisk Extreme PRO CFast2.0 64GB (SDCFSP-064G-xxx)
  • SanDisk Extreme PRO CFast2.0 128GB (SDCFSP-128G-xxx)
  • SanDisk Extreme PRO CFast2.0 64GB (SDCFSP-064G-xxxA)
  • SanDisk Extreme PRO CFast2.0 128GB (SDCFSP-128G-xxxA)
  • SanDisk Extreme PRO CFast2.0 64GB (SDCFSP-064G-xxxB)
  • SanDisk Extreme PRO CFast2.0 128GB (SDCFSP-128G-xxxB)

Why is No One Questioning Canon’s Responsibility?

While Canon only says it is “considering” a firmware update, I suspect that we will see one sooner rather than later. Canon has been pushing its package of the 1D X Mark II with a free SanDisk Extreme Pro CFast 2.0 64GB card since day one. In the current 1D X Mark II package on B&H, the included card is in the listed of affected cards provided by Canon. So, while Canon is trying to make clear that the SanDisk card is the problem, Canon is also partly to blame for the extent of affected users by pushing a defective card onto its users.

I’ll be keeping tabs on a firmware update to correct this problem.
