Canon has announced its newest entry-level DSLR, the EOS 1300D / Rebel T6 – price tag £289.99/€ 399.99 body only – which offers photographers a few improvements over its predecessor, the 1200D, while largely sticking to old tech.
The Canon EOS 1300D / Rebel T6 will be pitched at beginners, and slots in below the more advanced T6i and T6s models. Canon habitually uses its older tech for its base models, though, and the T6 is no exception.
It has an ‘improved’ 18-megapixel sensor and ‘updated’ DIGIC 4+ processor, but essentially this is tech from the older T5 camera repackaged.
The 9-point autofocus system is basic by any standards and the 3fps continuous shooting speed is unambitious, too.
But the EOS 1300D / Rebel T6 does include Wi-Fi and NFC, like the more expensive T6 models, and Canon claims this will enable users to easily take images and shoot them over to a smartphone for sharing in an instant.
The EOS 1300D / Rebel T6 is also extremely small. In fact it’s reminiscent of the existing Canon SL1, though its specs are actually slightly lower, so it’s unlikely that Canon is pitching it as a direct replacement.
Instead, the new Rebel T6 can be seen as a smaller, faster, enhanced version of the T5, and it’s the bottom rung of the ladder for newcomers to Canon’s EOS DSLR product range.
Other improvements over the T5 include an LCD screen with twice the resolution, at 920k dots, a new ‘Food’ scene mode and Canon’s White Priority auto white balance mode.
This is designed to deliver true whites in tough lighting situations (for example, tungsten bulbs throwing a slight orange cast).
The Canon EOS 1300D / Rebel T6 will be priced £289.99/€ 399.99 body only, while the EOS 1300D + EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 DCIII kit will cost £329.99/€459.99 and the EOS 1300D + EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II kit at £369.99/ €519.99.
The new Canon camera has a release date for early April 2016.
