Olympus Pen-F: price, specs, release date confirmed

Olympus has officially unveiled the Olympus Pen-F – price tag £999.99 body only – which features a built-in EVF and 50-megapixel high-resolution shot capability.

The latest camera in Olympus’s PEN range carries on the brand’s retro styling with a metal casing and leather-like surround on the body, while inside the PEN-F is a new 20-megapixel Live MOS sensor with no low-pass filter. Olympus claims the new sensor provides 25% better resolution, while keeping noise to a minimum and boosting dynamic range.

Aiding this claim is Olympus’s 5-axis image stabilisation technology, which the PEN-F inherits from its siblings the PEN E-P5 and OM-D E-M10 II.

Also inherited from the OM-D is Olympus’s High Res Shot technology, which combines several images in-camera to produce one image with resolution of up to 50 megapixels.

On board the Olympus PEN-F is a new built-in electronic viewfinder with a real-time preview of settings adjustments. The 2.38-million-dot OLED EVF also allows focus peaking and magnification of 0.62x.

Meanwhile, on the back of the camera a Vari-angle LCD allows photographers to shoot from low or awkward angles.

High-speed shooting is available at up to 10fps on the PEN-F, and the new Olympus camera offers a 1/8000sec maximum shutter speed, as well as an equivalent of ISO 80 for shooting in bright sunlight.

Olympus has linked AF spot metering to the AF target at the request of photographers, and the PEN-F also incorporates Eye Detect AF and touch-panel access to point focusing.

Other key specs of the Olympus PEN-F include two new Creative Dial options, Colour Profile Control and Monochrome Profile Control; built-in Wi-Fi, Olympus’s SuperSonic Wave Filter sensor cleaning technology and a True Pic VII processor.

Olympus PEN-F Price & Release Date

The Olympus PEN-F price tag body only will be £999.99 RRP inc VAT, with a release date scheduled from the end of February.

The PEN-F and M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 14-42mm 1-3.5-5.6 EZ Pancake lens kit will be priced at £1099.99 RRP inc VAT, and the PEN-F and M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 17mm 1:1.8 lens kit will be priced at £1199.99 RRP inc VAT.
