Leica Unveils X-U (Typ 113) Underwater Camera

Leica announced today the new X-U (Typ 113) underwater camera, which essentially the underwater version of the existing Leica X (Typ 113) camera. Familiar specs for the new Leica X-U include a 16.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and a fixed Leica Summilux 23mm f/1.7 ASPH. lens.

The Leica X-U also shoots 1080/30p video, features a 3″ LCD, 5fps frame rate, DNG image capture and a max sensitivity up to ISO 12,500. What sets the X-U apart, however, is its rugged and waterproof construction.

The Leica X-U is waterproof dow to depths of 49′ for up to 60 minutes. It is shockproof for falls from 4′ and dustproof. It also has an anti-slip rubber exterior to improve grip in wet conditions. Additionally, an integrated UW protective glass filter guards the front element. The X-U also has a manual focus ring that is even accessible when underwater, as well as a built-in flash that is integrated into the lens barrel.

Alongside the Leica X-U, the company is releasing a floating carry strap and an outdoor wrist strap.
