Nikon has announced the launch of its new flagship DX-format camera, the Nikon D500 (price tag unknown at the time of writing), promising many of the powerful features of Nikon’s new flagship FX-format camera, the Nikon D5, announced shortly before.
Chief among the Nikon D500’s features is the same 153-point AF system as the D5, which also boasts 99 cross-type sensors. With the Nion D500, AF capability can also be extended down to -4 EV with the central point and -3 EV with all other points, while a new AF engine and 180K-pixel RGB sensor also improves the performance of the camera’s Advanced Scene Recognition System, Nikon says.
Also inherited from the D5 is Nikon’s new EXPEED 5 image-processing engine, which Nikon says helps the new camera deliver high-quality images from a native sensitivity range of ISO 100 up to 51,200 (expandable up to ISO 1,640,000 at the D500’s Hi 5 setting.

Another signature feature of the Nikon D500 can record 4K UHD (3840 × 2160)/30p/25p/24p as well as 1080/60p video for up to 29 min. 59 s*1, with simultaneous output via HDMI available. It also possible to generate 4K UHD time-lapse movies within the Nikon D500.
On the outside of the Nikon D500 is a touch-sensitive 3.2in tilting LCD. The camera’s touchscreen shares another feature with the D5 in the form of text input on images, and also enables photographers to use touch AF and touch shutter.
The Nikon D500 also comes Wi-Fi enabled.
A Nikon D500 price tag and release date were not available the time of writing, but we will update this story when this information becomes available.
