The new Nikon camera was officially unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show, just a month after Nikon announced its development. Inside the Nikon D5 is a newly developed 20.8-megapixel FX-format CMOS image sensor and a 180,000-pixel RGB metering sensor which Nikon says delivers more accurate tonal gradations and detail.

Meanwhile, the Nikon D5 is powered by a new EXPEED 5 image processing engine.

Among the most significant features on Nikon’s new flagship camera is 4K/UHD video recording. In an upgrade over the D4s, the Nikon D5 can shoot 4K movies (3840×2160 pixels) at 30p/25p/24p in dot-by-dot native pixel crop, as well as Full HD (1080p) video at up to 50p/60p in multiple formats.

The Nikon D5 promises strong lowlight performance, with a native ISO range from 100 to 102,400, which is extendable up to a staggering ISO 3,280,000 equivalent at the Hi 5 setting.

Also on board is what Nikon calls a ‘next-generation AF’ system boasting 153 focus points and 99 cross-type sensors. The Nikon D5 offers AF sensitivity down to -4 EV (ISO 100, 20 °C/68 °F), with subjects at the periphery easily detected, Nikon says, while cross-type sensors around the edge of the focusing area enable vertical shooting.

What’s more, a new AF ASIC unit allocates maximum computing power to AF at all times, Nikon says.

Other features include the ability to shoot up to 12 fps with AE/AF tracking, or shoot up to 14 fps with mirror up. Nikon claims the D5’s AF tracking and viewfinder visibility are also significantly improved when shooting action sequences.

What’s more, Nikon says the D5 can also capture up to 200 NEF (RAW) or large JPEG images in one high-speed burst.

Other new features on the Nikon D5 spec sheet are Double XQD card slots, a new USB 3.0 port for high-speed transfer of large amounts of data, up to four times faster wireless connection and twice as fast Ethernet connection, Nikon says.
