How does the shutter speed setting work on your digital camera? The shutter is a mechanical part in your camera that opens and closes in a set time. Shutter speed is measured in seconds and fractions of seconds.
In our latest photography cheat sheet we’ve provided a quick guide to common shutter speeds and when you might use them…
1 Fast shutter speed
A fast shutter speed typically ranges from 1/4,000 sec to 1/500 sec.
2 Medium shutter speed
From 1/250 sec to 1/60 sec, you can still hold your camera by hand.
3 Slow shutter speed
Below 1/60 sec, you need to use a tripod. Your shutter setting can reach up to 30 seconds.
4 Bulb mode
Control the shutter manually if you require a setting longer than 30 seconds.
