DCW Reader Review: the Sony Xperia Z5 camera – Autumn (Sponsored)

We were given three of Sony’s new Xperia Z5 phones and hand-picked some tech-savvy readers to test its powerful new camera. We reached out to our community and asked for three willing participants to use the Xperia Z5 to shoot two subjects: cityscapes and autumn.

Powered by its amazing 23-megapixel sensor, the Sony Xperia Z5 is the world’s best camera in a leading smartphone* and promises to shake up the photography market by incorporating technology from Sony’s line of highly-rated Sony Alpha compact system cameras and SLTs.

Recently our readers Ray Liu, Liz Haydon-Turner and Martin Snelling embarked on the final task: autumn. Here’s how they got on…

Martin Snelling

Martin visited the rolling hills of the Hampshire countryside to try and capture the essence of autumn through the Xperia Z5 camera lens. With its vast meadows and fields pocked with woodlands, it proved the perfect hunting ground to capture the onset of autumn.

The excellent close-focusing capability of the Xperia Z5 allowed Martin to capture several different varieties of fungi, as well as some very autumnal colours contrasting with the mossy forest floor.

Though the great British weather conspired against him, Martin was nevertheless able to capture some stunning images during his shoot, picking out spots of vibrant tones amid the dull, grey conditions. All of the images you see here are straight from the Xperia Z5, with punchy colours that needed no lifting in post-processing.

Ray Liu

Thankfully, Ray was greeted with nice weather on the day of his autumn shoot, and managed to capture a local park in resplendent colour. He found that the Xperia Z5 does not require any tricks to record the same beautiful autumn tones the eye sees. The combinations of yellow, orange and red in the leaves made for such a rich colour blend, which the camera picked up nicely.

Ray found that the SteadyShot feature allowed him to avoid camera shake in darker conditions and shoot crisp, sharp images, such as this stunning silhouette.

Ray tried a combination of the Xperia Z5 camera’s 8-megapixel and 20-megapixel 16:9 ratio modes to compare how much fine detail they would capture and found excellent levels in both.

Liz Haydon-Turner

“As well as carpets of golden leaves, my sons and I found the last blackberries of the season, hawthorn berries and brilliant red Acer leaves when we ventured out for the autumn shoot.” This afforded Liz the opportunity to test the macro capabilities of the Xperia Z5’s camera. Using this function, the camera detects the focal length and puts itself in macro mode if you are using Superior Auto mode.

To shoot autumn colours, Liz decided to experiment with some of the camera’s creative filters. The filters are applied via the Creative Effects mode. Using this feature, you get a handy preview in the bottom third of the screen of each filter that can be applied to give you an idea of what your image might look like before capture.

As well as its technical prowess, Liz says she was also impressed by how user-friendly the Xperia Z5 was – particularly for novice photographers like her sons. Liz says that as her children accompanied her on her shoots, they became engaged with the Xperia Z5 and began taking their own pictures. “The Xperia Z5 has made photography fun and accessible to them, and this camera may be helping to encourage the next generation of shutterbugs!”

This autumn test shows how well the Xperia Z5’s camera can render vibrant, accurate colours and produce even exposures even in harsh lighting conditions. Ray, Liz and Martin tested the Xperia Z5’s native sensitivity range (which tops at a staggering 12,800) and achieved noise-free images at the upper levels. What’s more, the Exmor RS™ sensor enabled them to resolve finer detail in their autumn scenes.

Meanwhile, the camera’s 24mm wide-angle lens allowed them to capture more of these stunning autumnal vistas in all their glory!

With three Xperia Z5 models available, each of which comes in a range of colours, photographers have plenty of choice without compromising on performance. The Xperia Z5, Z5 Compact and Z5 Premium share the same sensor, autofocus, 5x Clear Image Zoom and SteadyShot, while the Xperia Z5 Premium also offers the world’s first 4K Ultra HD smartphone screen**.
