Canon’s 120MP DSLR May Introduce New Sensor Tech Beyond Bayer Pattern

Canon 120MP DSLR Prototype

Remember the 120MP Canon DSLR that we saw up close at the Canon Expo last month?

Well, Canon may be cooking up a new sensor technology to go along with the high resolution DSLR.

According to Canon Watch’s reliable source, the Bayer technology used for a RGB sensor (what all Canon DSLRs use) doesn’t work well enough for resolutions over 100MP. The source goes on to say that the new sensor technology may be similar to the Foveon technology we’ve seen in Sigma’s cameras – and Canon has previously sought patents for such multi-layer sensors.

I think this would still mean that we are talking about a full 120MP final image, which is what we saw at the Canon Expo, and not the stacked sensor resolution calculated as the 120MP as Sigma has referenced for its Foveon sensors with a much lower resolution.
