The Zeiss Otus 28mm f/1.4 lens is the latest in the high-end line and accompanies the Otus 55mm f/1.4 and the Otus 85mm f/1.4. Zeiss refers to the new Otus 28mm f/1.4 lens as “purely and simply the world’s best wide-angle lens.”
It features an all-metal lens barrel and a large rotation angle for the focus ring. The lens is constructed of 16 elements in 13 groups and is based on a Distagon, which Zeiss claims produces virtually distortion-free optics – even in the corners.
One of the lens elements has an aspheric optical surface and one element is aspheric on both sides. Eight other lens elements are made of special glass. Zeiss says that the floating element design delivers the image quality among all other competitors through the entire focus range.
The Zeiss Otus 28mm f/1.4 lens will be available for Canon EF (ZE) and Nikon F (ZF.2) mounts in the second quarter of 2016. No word yet on price; however, you can figure it will be in the neighborhood of the other Otus lenses, which are priced at $4,000 (55mm) and $4,500 (85mm).
