DJI is finally bringing its handheld gimbal 4K camera to market. After DJI previewed the tech back in January at CES 2015, DJI has announced the Osmo 4K camera with integrated gimbal will be available next week for $649.
The DJI Osmo uses the same gimbal technology found in its industry-leading quadcopters, which translates quite well to a handheld form factor.
The 3-axis gimbal allows for steady handheld shooting with very little effort on the part of the user. And it can take footage from what would otherwise be unusable footage to produce extremely smooth video.
The camera features a 1/2.3″ sensor that captures 4K video and 12MP still images using a 94° field-of-view lens, which is what’s found in the DJI Inspire 1 drone.
The camera and gimbal combine for some interesting features, including a panorama mode wherein the camera automatically pans around 360° to capture and stitch overlapping photos. The gimbal also extends handheld exposure time for still images. And the camera offers slow motion video with frame rates up to 120fps in 1080p capture.
The Osmo features a smartphone holder for connecting to your camera via an app that allows the smartphone to serve as a viewfinder and controller for your camera settings.
The Osmo handle features a built-in mic and a 3.5mm audio jack for attaching external mics and extend the flexibility of the camera.
The Osmo handle itself can be purchased separately from the camera combo and is compatible with other DJI Zenmuse cameras, including the Micro Four Thirds Zenmuse X5 Pro and Zenmuse X5 Raw cameras and gimbals.

Alongside the Osmo, DJI is launching a number of accessories to give users a variety of mounting options for shooting stabilized footage:
- Tripod – Place the Osmo securely on almost any surface.
- Extension Rod – Reach out further for all new angles. Combine with the Tripod for added height.
- Bike Mount – Lock the Osmo to your bike for a new kind of bike movie.
- Universal Mount – Add extra microphone or LED light to your Osmo.
- Straight Extension Arm – Mount two accessories to your Osmo at the same time.
The DJI Osmo retails for $649 (GBP549) and is scheduled to ship October 15. Check it out here at B&H Photo.
