Canon has been pretty consistent with its line of cameras that include the most recent Canon EOS 70D. These cameras are a popular step up from the entry-level Rebel line. And now that the Rebel line has gotten more serious with the Rebel T6s, I would expect to see some more advanced features on the Canon EOS 80D, which is expected to arrive in 2016.
Different spec rumors cite 24.2MP and 28MP sensors. The Rebel T6i/T6s features a 24.2MP sensor, so that would remain consistent with past Rebel and 60D-line models sharing the same resolution. However, as I said, the advanced features of the T6s have to push the 80D a little more on the specs – so maybe we’ll see a different sensor in this camera.
The 80D is not the camera you should look at for breakthrough technology due to its place in the market but expect the Dual Pixel AF and touchscreen LCD to remain. Also, WiFi and NFC are rumored (no surprise there) for the camera and possibly a bump in frame rate to 8fps. An upgrade AF system is also rumored (49 AF points by some rumors).
There is no mention of it in rumors yet, but I think the 80D will have to feature a clean HDMI output for capturing uncompressed video to an external recorder like the Atomos Ninja 2. The Rebel T6s offers this now and so the 80D should be able to match that spec. It is pretty much a universal feature on everything but the lowest-end cameras (thanks Sony & Nikon), so Canon really has no excuse to exclude it from the 80D.
And, of course, wireless charging is another feature that’s coming at some point. Just when and which model is the question. Seems more like a Rebel feature to introduce it in but just something to keep in mind…
In any event, these are all still rumors at this point and could really just be logical assumptions based on what we’ve seen in previous models. The 70D was a worthy upgrade from the 60D with just slightly better image quality though. It was the features like Dual Pixel AF and the touchscreen LCD that set it apart. If most of these features are present in the 80D, it seems like it will be a worthy, if uninspiring, upgrade from the 70D as well.
