Digital photography certainly isn’t shy of tricky camera settings and technical concepts – and for a beginner it can be pretty overwhelming. In her guest post, Lara Moore of KatchUp helps beginner photographers get an overview of what they might not know.
KatchUp has produced an infographic and accompanying guides that cover some of the building blocks that will help beginners become more confident photographers. It’s comprehensive, covering everything from technical foundations, all the way down to the more artistic aspects of photography. So having read through the guides, what are some simple, takeaway tips for the readers of Digital Camera World?
1. Enjoy the process of learning about photography
It’s tough and there’s a lot to cover, but the best part of getting to grips with a skill like photography is that it’s an endless journey. You’ll never stop learning or experimenting with different techniques. That’s the beauty of photography – it opens your eyes to opportunities you would have never noticed before.
2. Build from the ground up
Start by learning the foundations well before you move on to more advanced concepts. There are so many great resources available online for beginner photographers. My suggestion is to get composition down first – begin to get to grips with balance, positioning and how different elements in the frame can influence a photograph.
3. Shoot the same subject with multiple settings
Your camera will likely have a lot of different shooting modes. Shooting fast action shots? Try putting the camera into Shutter priority and increase the speed at which the photo is taken. Shooting in low light? Try shooting in Aperture priority and use a wider aperture to increase the amount of light entering your lens. Most importantly, take shots of the same subject in different shooting modes to figure out what kind of effects you like to see in your shots.
