The Papal Visit is a NO DRONE ZONE

The FAA has issued a prohibition on flying any drones during the Papal Visit from September 22-27 in Washington, D.C., New York and Philadelphia.

FAA No Drone Zone Papal Visit

The FAA notice states:

“Flying a drone anywhere Pope Francis will visit is against the law.  Any unmanned aircraft (UAS) – including radio-controlled model aircraft/UAS – are subject to FAA requirements.”

During the Superbowl, the FAA grounded drone flights in a 30-mile radius of the stadium in Phoenix, which included some uninhabited desert areas.

The actual notice is a little on the technical side. The ban boils down to limitations for the Washington area from September 22-24, the New York area within 2.3 miles of LaGuarida airport from 8-5 from September 16-24 and a 13.8 mile radius of downtown Philadelphia from September 26-28.

The restriction details are rather technical, so if you have to fly a drone on or around these days and you aren’t sure if the limitations apply to you, then please read up on the FAA’s notice here and be sure to click the technical restrictions for your city.
