Alongside the new A7S II, Sony also introduced a new 4K cinema camera – the Sony PXW-FS5.
The FS5 features a Super 35 CMOS sensor and accepts Sony E-mount lenses. It captures 4K video with the XAVC-L codec at 24p/30p frame rates. It will also capture 1080p HD video at full resolution up to 240fps.

Additionally, it will shoot High Frame Rate footage at up to 960fps at reduced resolution, which is scaled up to HD and conformed to a standard frame rate in-camera. This is akin to what we’ve seen in other recent Sony cameras starting with the FS700 and, more recently, with the RX100 IV and RX10 II.
It offers 3G-SDI and HDMI output for use with external recorders and has a pair of SD card slots for on-board capture. The SDI output provides 10-bit 422 HD out, while the HDMI 2.0 port provides both 4K and HD output. It also features an ethernet port, headphone output and a pair XLR audio inputs that offer phantom power.
The camera includes a built-in variable ND filters with adjustments from 1/4 to 1/128th ND filtration. You can also use ND presets at: Off, 1/4, 1/16 and 1/64th.
WiFi and NFC support allow you to view the camera’s stream remotely on a PC, tablet or smartphone. The ethernet port allows you to also use the same functions without the need for a WiFi connection. Additionally, you can do high-speed FTP uploads via the wired LAN.
The Sony FS5 looks, as it should, like the little brother to the FS7. It’s more affordable too at $5,599 for the body only and $6,099 for the camera with the Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS lens. The camera is expected to ship in November. Check it out here at B&H Photo.
