Sony A7S II: price, specs, release date confirmed

Sony has announced the Sony A7S II – price tag €3,400 – with internal 4K movie recording and a staggering sensitivity range up to 409,600.

An update to the Sony A7S, the A7S II is designed for photographers who shoot in challenging light conditions, Sony says, promising low noise and wide dynamic range across the new Sony camera’s entire ISO range thanks to the combination of its 35mm full-frame 12.2 megapixel image sensor and BIONZ X image processing engine.

The Sony A7S II offers a native ISO range from 100 to 102,400; however, this is expandable from 50 up to ISO 409,600.

Another upgrade to the Sony A7S II is its capability of recording 4K movies internally in the XAVC S format, and offers full pixel readout with pixel-binning in full-frame format.

What’s more, in a first for Sony’s A7 series, the A7S II can record 120fps at 100Mbps with full pixel readout without pixel binning in full frame format, which can be edited into 4x/5x slow motion footage in Full HD.

Sony has further enhanced the video capabilities of the A7S II with its new S-Gamut3.Cine / S-Log3 and S-Gamut3 / S-Log3 profiles, which the company says deliver wider dynamic range and make colour correction easier.

Meanwhile, a new Gamma Display Assist allows users to monitor images or check focus when recording S-Log movies. Sony says it has also improved the Zebra function on the A7S II.

Other features of the Sony A7S II include a 5-axis image stabilisation system found in Sony’s A7 II and A7R II cameras. This system helps correct camera shake along five axes during shooting, which includes angular, shift and rotational shake

Also on board is an upgraded 169-point AF system, with Fast Intelligent AF to detect contrast more easily. It can even react in low light situations as low as EV-4, Sony says.

Sony has also upgraded the A7S II viewfinder, which offers magnification of 0.78x (roughly 38.5 degrees in diagonal field of view) and employs ZEISS T* Coating to help reduce reflections.

The Sony A7S II is also Wi-Fi and NFC compatible.

The Sony A7S II price tag will be €3,400. A Sony A7S II price in US dollars or pounds sterling was not available at the time of writing. We will update when this information becomes available.

The full-frame Sony A7S II release date is scheduled for November 2015.
