Canon has several different configurations of its new Cinema EOS 8K camera on display at the Canon Expo in New York this week. The 8K cinema camera was announced as an in-development product earlier this week.

See several more views of the new camera in the photos below.

The 8K camera was mounted with a new 19.7-138mm T2.8 cinema lens, which is built for 8K resolution capture.

Additionally, Canon highlighted working prototypes of its new 8K display. The 8K image is simply stunning.

Canon 8K Reference Display

I watched several different 8K videos today and I’m blown away by what it looks like on these displays. It’s the most lifelike image I have ever seen on any screen. Of course, it will probably cost over $50k or $60k and is intended for broadcast and medical markets.

The camera has dual CFast card slots like the new Canon C300 Mark II. This should allow for much higher bit-rate recording but we don’t yet have specs on what compressed 8K footage looks like. However, Canon has produced exceptional codecs in its recent models and there’s not reason to doubt their 8K solution will be any different.

The Sony F65’s 8K RAW footage can churn 2Gbps of data with 3.6:1 compression. That equates to 250MB/s required write speed for a card, which current CFast 2.0 cards can handle. If Canon is as efficient with it 8K RAW compression, then we might see some form of full-resolution internal RAW capture on this upcoming camera.
