Kodak has unveiled a new version of its SP360 action camera. The Kodak PIXPRO SP360-4K camera features a 12MP sensor and a 360° lens for panoramic photo and video imagery.
The previously-released 1080p version uses a 16MP CMOS sensor and captures 1080/30p or 720/60p video at a retail price of $299.99.
The new SP360-4K doesn’t really capture 4K video even though Kodak tries to pass it off as such with a clever naming scheme. It actually captures video in 2028 x 2028 resolution at up to 50fps (likely 60fps in the US).
Of course 2028 x 2028 perhaps totals 4000 lines of resolution if you add the vertical and horizontal lines together but that’s not the same as true 4K at 4096 x 2160 or even UHD at 3840 x 2160, both of which offer about twice the resolution as Kodak’s SP360-4K camera.
The SP360-4K does offer quite a few resolution advantages in the video arena over the original SP360 though. The max square resolution, which I presume is for spherical video capture, on the original SP360 is 1440 x 1440 at 30p. Additionally, the SP360-4K gets a bump to 720p video at 120fps.
No word yet on price, but the Kodak PIXPRO SP360-4K is expected to ship in October.
