Case Logic KDB-101 Kontrast Pro-DSLR Backpack – Mini Review

You might recognize the brand Case Logic because if you’ve ever been to almost any electronics store, you’ll see their bags for computers, cell phones, & other gadgets on display.

But Case Logic also makes camera bags. And they’re pretty serious about these bags.

The Case Logic claim to fame is two-fold.

  • One: The bags are very high quality for the money.
  • Two: The bags have a plastic (water-resistant/water proof) bottom that is somewhat unique in the industry. They call that the DuraBase bottom.

More on those points in a moment.

I tried the Case Logic KDB-101 on a recent photo trip. It’s a backpack style bag. It uses a hammock strap-style system to suspend the bag and that offers good impact protection. It’s a foam-padded cocoon, isolating gear from bumps and damage if dropped.

The bag offers tons of room for lenses and camera bodies and has room for a large tablet AND a 15” laptop. I think it was smart of Case Logic to include space for both since so many photographers use both.

As with most camera bags you can customize the storage options with padding you can move around to make room for your particular camera/lens configuration.

The bag allows access from the top or from the back. I found it very convenient. You can put one DSLR (or two smaller mirrorless) camera bodies in the bag with a lens attached and depending on how big your lenses are, you can put another six to eight lenses in the bag along with accessories. It’s a large bag, especially for the money.

The straps are comfortable but not as comfortable as the straps on bags designed exclusively for photographers who go hiking.

The bag design is good and the build quality very good. You can quickly access memory cards, filters or small accessories through dual-access lid pocket. I also like the brightly colored interior. This makes it easier to find small, black photo accessories. The plastic bottom is not just a marketing gimmick. It works and makes me feel more secure about putting the bag down on the ground. Several times in the past I’ve put camera bags down on what I thought was dry ground only to find out it was indeed wet. That’s not a good feeling and the Case Logic plastic bottom prevents damage from water. It also helps the bag keep its shape.

In daily use I found the bag to be at least as versatile as any other camera bag I’ve tested.

The Case Logic KDB-101 Kontrast Pro-DSLR Backpack is available on Amazon for less than $125. While this bag is significantly more expensive than the AmazonBasics DSLR bag I reviewed last month, it’s still a great bargain. At this price, I find little to complain about.

It is slightly larger, has space for laptop & tablet, and has the waterproof bottom. If these things are important to you it’s worth a look. You can spend two to four times this money on one of the more well-known camera bag brands, but you won’t get two to four times the value.

Highly recommended.
